[Introduction to North Cyprus] North Cyprus Universities [Complaints and Feedback page] |
CIU
(Cyprus International University) Cyprus International University is situated near the village of Haspolat, on the outskirts of Lefkosa. A new, modern university with well laid out gardens and attractive buildings. The university website is available in six different languages which would suggest that the university values the international student community. The website appears to be an honest evaluation of what is on offer at CIU. On a recent visit to CIU, there appear to be few, if any, native English speakers teaching staff employed by this university. None appear to be mentioned on their web site. The university is small when compared to Near East or EMU but is growing at a steady rate; there is considerable on-going investment in the infrastructure at this university. On campus student accommodation is modern and clean with off campus accommodation available in nearby Lefkosa. The university boasts a modern cafeteria serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, given the fact that the campus is some distance from a sizable town this is essential. The university operates a quick and regular bus service into Lefkosa and the surrounding area but this tends to become erratic after classes have finished. Taxis. although plentiful, are not particularly cheap. The buildings are modern and fairly well equipped. Given the universities location the campus is going to be extremely hot during the summer months and cold in the winter, the owners appear to have prepared for this by installing an adequate heating and ventilation system. The university offers the usual range of courses and it would appear that the classrooms are bright and clean although some are on the small side. Sports and leisure facilities are available on campus. This is a comparatively new university so it is difficult to assess the academic achievements of past students. It is our opinion that this university offers a similar level of education to other similar sized establishments on the island. However, one glaring point that comes across from it website is that given its advertised ‘international’ status, there is an apparent absence of Native speakers and professors from overseas on the academic listings. The English Preparatory school does not list one non-Turkish name on its list of teachers. Perhaps more disturbing is the reports that those teachers that are listed are mainly recent graduates with limited teaching experience and who are poorly paid even by local standards. However, and this is definitely a plus, The director of the EPS has been in post for several years which would imply efficiency plus nerves of steel, a very thick skin, and possessing the well honed skills of a seasoned diplomat! The university lost three key members of staff to GAU at the start of this academic year which appears to have been advantageous to the latter. The campus is a little isolated but this is probably to allow for expansion in the future. This university is definitely worthy of further investigation but we are concerned about the English Preparatory Schools reliance on recent non - native speaker graduates, and the isolated location. THE SURROUNDING AREA. There is nothing of note in the immediate area except from the flat Mesarya plain, a few brothels, a cement factory, a marble tile factory, and the small village of Haspolat named Mia Milea in Greek; so named because it is one Greek mile (3 English miles) from the capital of Lefkosa. It is also a short distance from Ercan Airport which may or may not be an advantage depending on your point of view. Having said all that, it is quite peaceful! |
